Guaraná vs Matcha: Caffeine, Taste & Use

by Vallentine and Co on Sep 10, 2026
Matcha tea leaves beside ripe guaraná fruit and seeds in the Amazon rainforest

Quick answer: Guaraná and matcha are both naturally caffeinated, but they are very different drinks. Matcha is finely ground green tea with a grassy, earthy and often umami flavour. Vallentine & Co Guaraná Latte is a whole-seed guaraná paste blended with Australian bush honey, cinnamon and nutmeg for a warm, lightly spiced cup.

Neither is automatically “better”. The right choice depends on the flavour you enjoy, how you like to prepare your drink and how much caffeine is actually in your serve.

Guaraná vs matcha at a glance

  • Plant: Guaraná comes from the seeds of Paullinia cupana. Matcha comes from the leaves of Camellia sinensis, the tea plant.
  • Caffeine: Both contain caffeine naturally. The amount in a finished drink depends on the product, dose and preparation.
  • Flavour: Matcha is grassy, earthy and umami. Guaraná Latte is warm, lightly spiced and naturally sweetened with honey.
  • Format: Matcha is a fine powder whisked into water or milk. Vallentine & Co Guaraná Latte is a paste stirred into a splash of boiling water before milk is added.
  • Ingredients: Plain matcha is a single-ingredient tea powder. Our Guaraná Latte combines whole-seed guaraná, Australian bush honey, cinnamon and nutmeg.
  • Dietary note: Vallentine & Co Guaraná Latte contains honey, so it is not vegan.

What is the difference between guaraná and matcha?

The simplest difference is the plant. Guaraná is made from the seed of an Amazonian fruit. Matcha is green tea made by grinding specially grown and processed tea leaves into a fine powder.

Because you drink the suspended matcha powder rather than strain the leaves out, matcha is prepared differently from ordinary steeped tea. Guaraná products also vary widely. Some use extracts or powders. Vallentine & Co uses whole-seed guaraná in a ready-to-stir paste.

That means “guaraná versus matcha” is not just a comparison of two plants. It is also a comparison of two finished drinks: their ingredients, dose, flavour and preparation.

Does guaraná or matcha have more caffeine?

There is no honest universal winner at cup level. Guaraná seed is naturally caffeine-dense, while matcha also contains caffeine. But a raw ingredient comparison does not tell you how much caffeine ends up in the drink in front of you.

For both products, caffeine per serve changes with the amount used. Matcha strength depends on the grams of powder. Guaraná drinks depend on the form of guaraná, concentration and serving size. Even two cafés can make the “same” drink at different strengths.

If caffeine matters to you, compare the stated caffeine per serve on the actual products rather than relying on broad claims about the plants. Your response can also vary with your sensitivity, time of day, food intake and other caffeine consumed.

How do guaraná and matcha taste?

Matcha has a distinctive green-tea character. Depending on grade and preparation, it can taste grassy, vegetal, earthy, slightly bitter and savoury or umami. Some people love that direct tea flavour. Others prefer it softened with milk or sweetness.

Whole-seed guaraná has its own natural bitterness, but that is not the whole flavour of a Vallentine & Co Guaraná Latte. We balance it with Australian bush honey, cinnamon and nutmeg. The result is warm, gently spiced and naturally sweet, without pretending to be coffee or matcha.

If you enjoy the fresh, vegetal flavour of green tea, matcha may be your lane. If you want a café-style drink with familiar spice and sweetness, Guaraná Latte may be the easier fit.

Which one is easier to make?

Both can be simple once you know the method.

Traditional matcha is sifted and whisked with hot water, often using a bamboo whisk, before it is topped with more water or milk. A small milk frother can also work for everyday preparation. Because the powder can clump, the first whisk matters.

To make Vallentine & Co Guaraná Latte hot, add about one teaspoon, or 10g, of paste to a cup. Add a splash of boiling water and stir until smooth, then add hot milk. For an iced version, dissolve the paste first, then add cold milk and ice.

The paste format is deliberate. We developed it in hospitality, where consistency and speed matter.

Is guaraná better than matcha for energy?

“Better energy” is personal, and neither drink guarantees a particular feeling. Both supply caffeine. How that feels depends on the dose, how quickly you drink it, your caffeine tolerance and what else is happening in your day.

It is tempting to say one source releases caffeine slowly or gives everyone smoother energy. The evidence does not support making that promise for every product or person. A more useful approach is to choose a flavour and serving size you enjoy, pay attention to total caffeine, and notice how your own body responds.

Healthdirect notes that caffeine affects people differently and can interfere with sleep or cause unwanted effects for some people. If you are sensitive to caffeine, start conservatively and avoid stacking several caffeinated drinks without keeping track.

Ingredients: a practical comparison

Pure matcha generally contains one ingredient: powdered green tea leaves. Commercial matcha latte mixes may include sugar, milk powder, flavours or other ingredients, so check the label if that matters to you.

Vallentine & Co Guaraná Latte contains four ingredients: whole-seed guaraná, Australian bush honey, cinnamon and nutmeg. It contains caffeine and honey. The paste is crafted in the Byron Shire and designed for hot, iced and blended drinks.

If you want an unsweetened single-ingredient tea, plain matcha has the advantage. If you want the sweetness and spice already balanced for you, the Guaraná Latte paste keeps preparation short.

Guaraná vs matcha: which should you choose?

Choose matcha if you enjoy green tea, want an earthy and umami flavour, and do not mind whisking a fine powder.

Choose Guaraná Latte if you want a caffeinated coffee alternative with warm spice, natural sweetness and a quick stir-and-pour method.

Or keep both. Coffee, matcha and guaraná do not need to fight for a single winner. They are different tools for different tastes and moments.

Try Guaraná Latte at home

Vallentine & Co Guaraná Latte is made with whole-seed guaraná, Australian bush honey, cinnamon and nutmeg. A 350g jar makes approximately 35 serves when used at 10g per cup.

Does guaraná contain caffeine?

Yes. Guaraná seed naturally contains caffeine. Finished guaraná products can vary significantly, so compare products by their serving information rather than assuming every drink has the same amount.
