Guaraná vs Coffee: Caffeine Compared

by Vallentine and Co on May 27, 2026
Coffee and guaraná shown side by side for comparison

Quick answer: Coffee and guaraná both naturally contain caffeine. Guaraná seed is more caffeine-dense by weight than coffee bean, but that does not mean every guaraná drink contains more caffeine than every coffee. The amount in the cup depends on the ingredient, serving size and preparation.

Coffee has its place. We love it. But if you are looking for a different way to do energy, guaraná is worth understanding.

Guaraná vs coffee at a glance

  • Caffeine: Both naturally contain it.
  • Raw ingredient: Guaraná seed is more caffeine-dense by weight, but the caffeine in finished drinks varies.
  • Plant source: Coffee comes from coffee beans. Guaraná comes from the seed of the Paullinia cupana fruit, native to the Amazon Basin.
  • Flavour: Coffee is roasted and characteristically bitter. Guaraná Latte is warm, spiced and naturally sweetened.
  • Best fit: Coffee if you want coffee. Guaraná if you want a caffeinated alternative that feels different.

Does guaraná have more caffeine than coffee?

By dry weight, guaraná seed can contain considerably more caffeine than coffee beans. The NCBI reports guaraná seed at around 2% to 8% caffeine, compared with around 1% to 3% for coffee beans.

But that compares the raw ingredients, not the finished drinks. Coffee caffeine varies with the bean, dose, brewing method and serving size. Guaraná products vary too. So a guaraná drink is not automatically stronger than a coffee.

For a practical comparison, look at caffeine per serve rather than just the plant it came from.

For a closer look at why raw seed, extracts and finished drinks can show very different numbers, read our practical guide to guaraná caffeine content.

Guaraná vs caffeine: are they the same thing?

The stimulant in both is caffeine. Guaraná seed also naturally contains compounds such as tannins, catechins and other polyphenols, but current evidence is not strong enough to say those compounds make caffeine release predictably slower in everyone.

That distinction matters. We would rather be accurate than turn guaraná into magic. The source is different, the whole plant material is different and the finished drink is different, but individual response to caffeine still varies.

So why can the experience feel different?

What you feel from a caffeinated drink is influenced by more than the caffeine source. Total dose, how quickly you drink it, whether you have eaten, time of day and your own sensitivity all matter.

Then there is the drink itself. Vallentine & Co Guaraná Latte uses whole-seed guaraná with Australian bush honey, cinnamon and nutmeg. It is warm, lightly spiced and café-style. The flavour feels familiar without trying to copy coffee.

That is what we mean by a different way to do energy. You still get a real caffeine lift, just in a very different format.

What makes guaraná a useful coffee alternative?

A lot of coffee alternatives remove caffeine altogether. That can be perfect if you want to avoid caffeine, but not if the reason you drink coffee is because you actually want energy and focus.

Guaraná sits in a different lane. It naturally contains caffeine, so it can work as a coffee substitute for people who still want a caffeinated drink.

For us, a good coffee alternative needs to do more than replace coffee flavour. It should taste good, feel at home in a café cup and be easy to make at home or in service.

Guaraná contains caffeine, so individual sensitivity and total caffeine intake still matter.

Why Vallentine & Co uses whole-seed guaraná

We chose whole-seed guaraná rather than isolated caffeine because we wanted to keep the ingredient recognisably itself.

Whole-seed guaraná contains caffeine alongside the seed’s naturally occurring plant compounds. We blend it into a paste with Australian bush honey, cinnamon and nutmeg, which makes it quick to use and gives the drink its warm, familiar flavour.

It was built in hospitality, where it needed to be consistent, easy to stir and genuinely enjoyable. Not a powder you have to force down, and not a fake coffee.

Is guaraná better than coffee?

Not universally. Coffee has its place. Guaraná has its place too.

If coffee works well for you and you love it, keep drinking it. Guaraná makes sense when you want another caffeinated option, especially when you still want something warm, satisfying and café-style.

The useful question is not which one wins. It is which one suits what you want from your day.
